Monologues
for Women, by Women, edited by Tory Haring-Smith, first appeared
almost three decades ago in the USA. We present to you carefully
selected pieces, each representing a unique woman’s voice expressing
a moment of her experience. Our group found these pieces relevant
in the paucity of women’s scripts in India that spoke boldly
and
with humour, however dark at times. We are encouraged to hear Indian
women begin to express themselves in individual voices and we hope
to encounter many such scripts with multiple regional flavours. This
collection will find resonance with those of us who are committed to
celebrating women, who share of themselves unabashedly and with
authenticity
in voices bold and clear.

Chennai City Resilience Strategy
No
single image or story captures the city of Chennai. Experiences overlap,
refract and reflect to form an ever-changing collage of the city’s struggles
and triumphs. Classical and contemporary, rich and poor, acceptance
and aggression, discipline and disregard, floods and drought,
concrete and greenery, all come together to give you a city with
a history and a future. This,
then, is the path to building resilience in our city. As we move into the
future, we need a city strategy that considers and respects these many
truths, embracing diverse conditions and needs. A strategy that makes
our city enlightened and integrated.Resilient
Chennai is the Chennai city chapter of 100 Resilient Cities (100RC),
a program pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation. 100RC is
an organization that helps cities around the world become more
resilient
to the physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing
part of the 21st century. Chennai’s
Resilience Strategy 2019 was prepared by a team headed by
the city’s Chief Resilience Officer, Mr. Krishna Mohan Ramachandran. He will highlight the shocks and stresses
facing the
city,
preparedness of the city and the lack of it, and future course of action.

Showcasing of the Film “I AM”
What
if the solution to the world’s problems was right in front of us all along?
The
film I AM is
the story of a successful Hollywood director, Tom Shadyac
(of Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, Ace Ventura, Nutty professor fame)
who experienced a life-threatening head injury, and his ensuing journey
to try and answer two very basic questions:“What’s
wrong with our world?” and “What
can we do about it?”With
a film crew of four, Tom visits some of today’s great minds, including
authors, poets, teachers, religious heads and scientists searching
for the fundamental epidemic problem that causes all of the other
problems, while simultaneously reflecting on his own life choices of
excess, greed and eventual healing.
“We started asking what’s wrong with the world, and ended up discovering what’s right with it.” –
Tom Shadyac
Please
note, the movie hall is on the
Second Floor with no lift facility. We will be serving snacks on the first

IWA Book club
invites you to a discussion on the book, “ One Part Woman”, by Permual Murugan, one of India’s most prolific literary
writers. Winner of the prestigious ILF Samanvay Bhasha Samman for
writing in Indian languages, this book also won the Translation
Prize from India’s National Academy of Letters.“Murugan’s
unsurpassed ability to capture Tamil speech lays bare the
complex organism
of the society he adeptly portrays: the double entendres men
use towards Kali affirm their own masculinity as much as they mock
him; women employ their only freedom, the freedom of speech, to put
other women in their place; and most of all, the unsparing barbs
of a judgmental, caste-ridden, patriarchal society alienate a
couple longing to be like any other. Aniruddhan Vasudevan’s
idiomatic translation preserves the mood of the original, and
serves as a constant linguistic reminder that, as readers in
English, we are
but visitors to this realistic pre-independence Tamil world. For a
book that earned its author death threats and was burned by mobs, One
Part Woman is a surprisingly tranquil, sensuous read.” - The Guardian

Antaranga Sadhana,
Journey to Becoming our Best Selves
We
recognize our manifest emotions, anger and fear, but not the underlying
subtle emotions which affect our choices. Antaranga Sadhana helps
us explore, discover and master our inner self with
the help of ancient Indian texts, the Puranas.
Parthasarathy is
a yoga therapist, trainer and coach who continues
his
studies (which began 7 years ago) with Saraswathi Vasudevan of
Yoga Vahini & Raghu Anantanarayanan of Ritambara,
in the lineage of Sri Krishnamacharya.
A software engineer by training, he is passionate about
taking yoga to rural India. Partha will
take us through an experiential reflective session to look at some
of the underlying, not so obvious emotions that heavily and subconsciously
influence our choices.
We
hope to recognize the importance of emotional self-discovery in
the
journey of being and becoming the best we can be.
